PEI’s first CyberPatriot team secures the gold tier as they head to the state competition

Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island - Hack the Red Island obtained a spot in the gold tier of the CyberPatriot National Youth Cyber Defense Competition after the team prevailed in Round 2 on Sunday November 6th, 2022 at STEAM PEI in Charlottetown.

Hack the Red Island is the name of Prince Edward Island’s first team to ever participate in CyberPatriot’s competition. The team is made up of five students in Grade 12 from Charlottetown Rural High School and Colonel Gray High School who have a passion for computers and a dedication to learn: German Ivkovich, Mohamad Eyad Allaham, Kalan Rattray, Persehaj Singh Baidwan, and Adnan Hussein.

The CyberPatriot National Youth Cyber Defense Competition is the largest cybersecurity competition in the world. Hack the Red Island participated virtually with over 3000 teams worldwide to gain as many points as possible in six hours. They found and fixed security vulnerabilities in Windows 10, Server 2019, and Ubuntu 22, and completed a quiz and virtual networking exercise in the Cisco NetAcad challenge.

After Round 2 on Sunday, Hack the Red Island had 339.86 out of 660 points, which placed them in the top half of teams. Their strong abilities got them in the gold tier, which is the second highest tier. They will compete in the State Round against over 800 teams of their skill level and fight to be in the top 25% in order to get to Semifinals.

State Round of the competition will take place on December 10th, 2022. News of the results will follow.
